Clayton County, Georgia Inmate Search

An inmate search in Clayton County involves checking the county’s custody records to find out where someone is being held. Inmate information is typically available locally from the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, which oversees the county jail operations.

The Clayton County Jail is not the only jail serving the county. The Riverdale Jail, managed by the Riverdale Police Department, and the Jonesboro Jail, operated by the Jonesboro Police Department, also serve as detention facilities in the county. These jails typically hold arrestees within city limits until they are released or transferred to the county jail.

Clayton County is also home to a prison, the Clayton County Prison. The prison is managed by the Corrections Department and only houses state convicts.

How to Find an Inmate in Clayton County Jail

The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office oversees the county jail and is responsible for the safekeeping of all inmate records, making it the primary agency for inmate searches. Individuals can generally search for an inmate in the Clayton County Jail using the Sheriff’s Inmate Search portal.

If the desired information is not available on the portal or the inmate is not present, inquirers may contact the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office in person. The Office is obligated to have a printed jail docket book available for public inspection in accordance with state law (OCGA 42-4-7). Inquirers may also call the Sheriff’s Office at (770) 477-4479 to obtain information over the phone.

How to Use the Clayton County Jail Roster

The Clayton County jail roster is maintained by the Sheriff’s Office and can generally be accessed and inspected in person at the office. However, the Sheriff’s Office also provides an electronic version of the roster on its website. Researchers may access this roster by using their mobile phone or computer to visit the Sheriff’s website. To access the roster, select the "Inmate Search" portal in the menu on the left side of the website.

Users can then search the portal using the inmate’s name or their booking date, which may be the 48-hour, 14-day, or 31-day docket book. When searching by name, users should enter at least the last name (a first initial or first name can be used to refine the search, though this is optional). The name search only returns inmates currently in jail, not those who may have been released, even if they were booked recently.

What Information is Included in the Clayton County Inmate Roster

The Clayton County Inmate Roster contains several details concerning an inmate. Under the Georgia Open Records Act, information contained in the roster is generally public; however, sensitive information is usually redacted to protect the privacy of the inmate or for security reasons. Generally, public inmate information includes

  • The inmate details: Full name (including aliases), gender, race, height, age, and weight
  • Booking information: Intake date and time, Law Enforcement (LE) number, arresting agency, and release date and time
  • Description of the charges
  • Bond amount

Information typically removed from public view includes an inmate’s mugshot (only on a website, per OCGA 35-1-19) and the inmate’s social security number, home address, security classification, medical records, and disciplinary reports.

How to Send Money to an Inmate in Clayton County Jail

Inmates in the Clayton County jail are often stripped of their cash when incarcerated. This makes it impossible for them to purchase the necessary items they might need while in jail. To address this, the Sheriff’s Office provides a commissary account for inmates, where cash collected from them is deposited, and their family and friends can send them money.

Individuals who want to deposit money into an inmate’s commissary account may visit the Sheriff’s Office. However, for inmates who were once in jail, but went through trial, were convicted, and then sentenced to the Clayton County Prison, the procedure is different. Loved ones can only send money to the inmate by money order or cashier’s check. The money order should be made payable to the inmate (not the prison) and should include the inmate’s GDC ID number. Also, the dorm number, the prison’s mailing address, and the sender’s return address should be written on the front of the envelope.

Inmate Search by Jail Facility

There is one primary county-wide jail and two municipal holding facilities for short-term detention in Clayton County. Individuals held in the Clayton County Jail can generally be located using the Sheriff’s Inmate Search tool. Individuals may search by the inmate’s name or any of the booking timeframes. To obtain information about an inmate that is not available online, such as their mugshot, individuals may visit the Sheriff’s Office to inspect the physical copy of the jail roster or call the office to make an inquiry.

Records of inmates in municipal jails are maintained by the respective police department. Individuals interested in the records may visit the department’s office and provide the name of the individual they are looking for. Providing the arrest date and time may help the department locate the record faster.

Clayton County Visitation Rules and Schedules

Individuals may visit pretrial detainees in the Clayton County Jail. However, visits do not occur at any time; they occur according to the appointed schedule and procedures set forth by the Sheriff’s Office. Visitors may contact the Sheriff’s Office to obtain the visitation schedule and verify the necessary procedures.

For post-trial arrestees who were convicted and sentenced to the Clayton County Prison, visitation is handled by the Corrections Department. Before an individual is allowed to visit an inmate, they must be on the inmate’s visitation list. The visitation list is usually completed by the inmate during the orientation interview in prison. The list may contain up to 12 individuals and primarily consists of the inmate’s immediate family. Individuals outside the inmate’s immediate family may be added to the list after additional review.

Visits occur only on Saturdays, Sundays, and county holidays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Late arrivals between 10:15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. are held until after 11:00 AM. If the visitation room reaches maximum capacity, early arrivals may need to leave after one hour (minimum) to make space for others. Inmates are generally allowed to receive visitors up to four hours each day.

Visitation at the prison is considered a privilege and may be suspended or revoked if a visitor does not comply with state rules. Below are some of the general rules visitors should adhere to:

  • Providing a valid ID card (for visitors aged 16 and above)
  • Not coming to visit while intoxicated
  • Not having narcotics or illegal drugs in their possession
  • Not behaving in an indecent or immoral way towards the inmate
  • Dressing appropriately and not provocatively

Visitors who violate the rules may be temporarily or permanently removed from the inmate’s visitation list.

Mailing and Commissary Information

An inmate’s loved ones may send them mail as an alternative or in addition to visiting them. Because the Sheriff’s Office oversees the county jail, mail intended for an inmate will be directed to the Sheriff’s Office. Mail sent to the Sheriff’s Office must include the inmate’s name and their LE number, so the recipient can be properly identified. Individuals may call the Sheriff’s Office for specific instructions on how to properly address and format mail (letters, etc.) to avoid rejection and return.
